Last Thursday evening our two Year Five classes represented the school in the dance section of the Performing Arts Festival. The girls performed Earth Song and the boys performed Beat It, each song by Michael Jackson.
The benefits of a dance programme are not commonly known, but dance has been documented as showing improvement in visuospatial capacity, coordination between hand and eye movement and fine motor skills. Fitness and team building skills are additional benefits and of course the students love being out from behind a desk. The action of performance is also seen to increase confidence in the classroom. We separate our girls and boys for dance to enhance their confidence so that they can perform in their own particular style without feeling self conscious.
All that aside, our students applied self discipline as they learnt their routines and took pride in their performances. As teachers we were very proud of their efforts. We are very pleased to announce that the boys received a Certificate of Merit for their performance. We are also very grateful for the assistance we had from parents in preparing costumes and make up.
If you missed their performance, you have two more opportunities to view it at the commencement of Father's Night 5pm here at St Anthony's on September 6th and at Carnevale at Forrest Chase in the city on September 8th between 12pm and 2pm.
